Beginning in summer 2024, New York State (NYS) is implementing Summer EBT, a new federal program to help low-income households with children purchase food over the summer when school is out of session and children can no longer rely on access to free/reduced price school meals. The Summer EBT benefit of $120 per eligible child will be issued on an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card that families can use just like Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits to purchase eligible food items at SNAP participating grocery stores, farmers markets, and other retailers; these benefits expire 122 days from the date that the benefits are issued.

tPlease note that this is not a DOE program. For questions, direct families to OTDA.NY.gov/SummerEBT and then call the Summer EBT Customer Service Helpline (1-833-452-0096) if further assistance is needed. The helpline will be able to answer questions about a specific child’s eligibility beginning July here...
Health Guidance for Ill Students

The winter season coincides with an increase in viruses and other illnesses within school communities. Please review Health Guidance and Resources for Families. In addition, if a student becomes ill during the school day, the school nurse will determine, based on the student’s symptoms and the nurse’s professional clinical judgement, if the student needs to go home. School nurses will work with school administrators and supervisors to ensure that students who are not well enough to stay in school are not sent back to class.

We are reaching out with important information about the upcoming Initial Opt-out Period for the Save for College Program. This year, the Initial Opt-out Period will take place from Monday, 11/4, to Wednesday, 12/4.

All Kindergarten, first, second and third grade students are automatically enrolled in the Save for College Program and receive a free NYC Scholarship Account unless their parent/guardian chooses not to participate by opting out. After learning about the Program during the Education Period, families have the opportunity to opt out of the Program. Parent/guardians who wish to opt out have two options:

  • Opt out within their NYC Schools Account (recommended) OR

  • Return a signed opt-out form to their child’s school for data entry into ATS by December 4th

If families wish to participate in the Program, no additional steps are necessary and they will receive information in January about how to activate and view their child’s NYC Scholarship Account.

Early this fall, New York State Education Department (NYSED) will conduct a series of Blue Ribbon Commission “Ambassador Forums” to provide an opportunity for the public to share their thoughts about NYSED’s proposed vision for implementing the recommendations of the Blue Ribbon Commission on Graduation Measures (BRC). The BRC was established to develop recommendations to the Board of Regents on what measures of learning and achievement could better serve New York’s diverse student population as indicators of what students should know and be able to do upon graduation in readiness for college, career, and civic life, and how they should be able to demonstrate their knowledge and skills. In November 2023, the BRC presented its recommendations for achieving these goals, then in June 2024, NYSED presented its vision to implement the BRC’s recommendations.

Chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos will be embarking upon a Five-Borough Listening Tour to open dialogue with school communities across New York City. We enthusiastically invite parents, educators, students, and local leaders to share their perspectives on key educational issues affecting our city's public-school families and students.

An event will be held in each borough of New York City featuring structured discussions on topics such as special education, curriculum development, and mental health resources, culminating in a Q&A session with Chancellor Aviles-Ramos and NYCPS leaders.
